Tree Planting at Páirc a Tobair 🌳
All pupils from 3rd - 6th class were recently invited to help out planting trees at Páirc a' Tobair. Each tree planted helps capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, meaning that every tree planted is another step in the right direction in our fight against climate change. The girls were delighted to help and learnt so much about biodiversity and the importance of planting trees in the process.
Citizen Science in Action: Flower-Insect Timed Count 🌺🦋
Availing of the beautiful April sunshine, a small team of Green Schools Committee members conducted a Flower-Insect Timed (FIT) count at our local GAA pitch. The count was motivated by our local Tidy Towns efforts to monitor and encourage biodiversity in Rosscarbery. The children conducted the count to gather information about how many insects are flying about and visiting flowers, giving scientists at Biodiversity Ireland an indication as to how insects are doing in our local area. It was an excellent example of citizen science in action for the children.
Why not conduct your own count at home?
Click here for FIT Count and recording instructions. It’s easy, it only takes 10minutes and will help scientists track changes in our insect numbers in Rosscarbery and across Ireland.
