School Activities
Here are a few examples of the wide range of school activities we enjoy at St. Mary's.
Rowing
We have been fortunate enough to be trained by the local rowing club and use the facilities at the lagoon as part of our P.E. We competed in the inter schools rowing competition for the last two years and have been very successful.
Debating
The senior girls are tutored in debating and participate in the inter-school debating competition.
Language Connects 'Say Yes to Languages'
The senior classes were introduced to Irish Sign Language (ISL) as part of the 'Say Yes to Languages' Language Connects initiative. This initiative aims to increase language awareness, support inclusion and encourage the uptake of languages.
Basketball
The girls in Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Class are coached in basketball after school every week. Ms. O’ Brien coaches them on a voluntary basis. This year, the school participated in Cispheil na mBunscoil, which took place in the Parochial Hall, Gurranabraher, Cork City. This was the first time the school has participated in this competition and the girls really enjoyed the experience.
Football
The school participates in the Sciath na Scol football competition every year. This is always very popular and the team has been very successful over the past number of years.2018 we are once again finalists.
Green Schools
We have five green flags. This has been a ten year approach to water conservation, recycling, energy conservation, travel and biodiversity. The Green Schools Committee is made up of two pupils from each class from Second to Sixth Class, along with Mrs. Huethorst and Ms. Tobin.
Discover Primary Science
Having participated in the Discover Primary Science Programme, the school has been awarded a plaque in recognition of Science and Maths Excellence.
Cookery
We have an electric cooker in the school and all the pupils have enjoyed making pancakes, gingerbread men and much more- we have all enjoyed sampling the finished products! We have made soup, bread, butter and flap jacks.
School Garden
We love to garden at our school. We have a polytunnel, raised beds, a willow hut and more. We enjoy learning about planting and growing flowers, vegetables and supporting our local wildlife.
School Choir
St. Mary's Primary School Choir was formed in September 2011 consisting of pupils from Second to Sixth Class. It is a two-part choir, meeting on a weekly basis.
Cork City Sports
The school sends a representation every year to this event, which is held in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, and we have been very successful in this competition over the last number of years.
Credit Union Quiz
Two teams are selected annually to represent the school in this quiz and have consistently performed very well.
